Mount Etna Europeʹs largest and most active volcano, Mount Etna, awaits exploration. Our journey to the crater leads us through charming villages and a continually changing landscape. The lower slopes of the volcano boast incredible fertility, hosting groves of oranges, lemons, and various Mediterranean flora, as well as vineyards that produce Sicilyʹs finest wines. We traverse through forests featuring chestnut trees that gradually give way to oak, beech, birch, and pine. Syracuse Syracuse ranks among the most enchanting cities in Sicily, with a history that often goes overlooked as the once paramount city in Western Europe. The cityʹs genesis can be traced back to Greek settlers who, starting from 733 BC, transformed Sicily into Magna Graecia, a period when Greece held dominion not only over the Mediterranean but also the known world. Ortigia, Ancient Syracuse, is indeed an island now connected to the mainland by a short bridge. It remains the heart and soul of Syracuse, chosen by the Greeks for the establishment of their new city primarily for defensive reasons. In recent years, Ortigia has undergone a rejuvenation, attracting an increasing number of visitors. Piazza Duomo - Located at the center of Ortigia is Piazza Duomo, with the Duomo itself standing as its centerpiece. The Duomo is a truly unique structure. Originally constructed by the Greeks as the Temple of Athena, it was later converted into a Christian church when the Byzantines conquered Syracuse, a departure from the usual practice of demolishing such temples. The Normans made interior modifications and added a more Christian facade. After the 1693 earthquake destroyed the facade, the baroque facade that we see today was erected. The Duomo, one of the worldʹs oldest sites of continuous worship, is a remarkable fusion of Greek, Byzantine, and Norman influences.
