Syracuse: A Journey Through Time

Syracuse, a city steeped in history, boasts an Archaeological Zone that includes the world-renowned Teatro Greco, which is still in use today. The heart of ancient Syracuse is the island of Ortygia. Within a short stroll through its pedestrian zone, youʹll encounter the magnificent Duomo. Originally a Greek temple dedicated to Athena in the 5th century BC, its interior is primarily Norman, while the facade showcases stunning early 18th-century Sicilian Baroque architecture. Nearby, the Fonte Aretusa, a fresh water spring that drew the first Greek settlers, offers a picturesque view of the bay. A short walk from the Duomo lies Caravaggio’s ʺBurial of Santa Luciaʺ in a small, charming church.
